SUGERCANE CROP DISEASES (Pokkah Boeng disease)

POKKAH BOENG DISEASE:

Casual Organisms= Fusarium Sacchari

 

Symptoms=

They are three types of symptoms=

Chlorotic Phase:

·      Earliest symptoms of pokkahboeng is a chlorotic towards the base of young leaves and occasionally on the other part of leaf bladis.

Top Rot Phase:

·      The most advanced and serious stage.

·      Young spindle are killed and downward and penetrates in the stalk by way of a growing point.

Knife-Cut Phase:

 

·      These symptoms are associate with top rot phase characterized with by 1 or2 or even more transverse cut in the wind of the stalk.

Disease Cycle=

Perennation=

·      Through soil, crop and collateral host as and chlamydospore

Primary infection=

·      Through conidia present in leaf and soil host.

Secondary infection=

·      Through wind, infected setts, irrigation water and rains.

 

Favourable condition=

·      P.H.= 6.5-7.5

·      Temperature=

a) Minimum temperature :10-15 degree.

b) Optimum temperature :30 degree.

c)  Maximum temperature: 35-40 degree.

·      Humidity= 70-80%

 

Management=

                       CULTURAL METHOD

·      Proper sanitation application applies in the field. E.g.: soil solarization.

·      Proper spacing maintain row to row and plant to plant.

·      Remove infarcted part of the plant.

·      Apply good weed management practices.

·      Apply good irrigation application in the filed area.

·      Grow resistant varieties.

·       Canes showing ‘top rot’ or ‘knife cut’ should be rogued out.

 

 

                       Chemical method

Use some effective fungicides to control the disease in field area. they are following.

·      Spraying of 0.1%bavistin (1gm/L of water).

·      0.2% blitox-50(2gm/L of water).

 

·      Copper oxychloride 0.3%Dithane M-45 (3gm/L of water).
